How to Build An Outdoor Home Gym – Episode 1

I’m getting tired of being cooped up in a sweaty, germ-infested gym full of meathead bodybuilders (stop doing your bicep curls on my squat rack!) and cardio queens who don’t know when to quit with the “ankle-weight-step-up-glute-squeezes”.

So I’m taking matters into my own hands.? I’m building a home gym in my backyard (and a 2-level deck w/a fence and a pre-fab shed).? I’ve got kettlebells that go up to 72lbs, blast straps & a sandbag and with the revamped backyard, I’ll be able to use a few more “new” toys as well.

Check out what I’m doing…

Have a great weekend!

Make sure to check back on Monday for another video!

  1. Very exciting! I’m looking forward to seeing how you set up the monkey bars. My plan for my back yard this summer is various height chin up bars for kids, mom & dad, and most ambitiously, a 15ft rope climb! I’ve got kid height rings set up off a tree branch, but need to get some rings going for my wife and I. The slackline has been a fun addition already, check out my profile photo on facebook for a pic!

  2. @Jeff – Great idea about the rope and the rings. I wanted to put 2 chin bars up as well, but the girls convinced me that monkey bars may be the better (READ: “more fun”) option for them.
The plan is to get 4 fence posts drilled into the ground and then mount the rungs myself. We’ll see. Either way, it’ll be nice to have a place to hang my blast straps and maybe a set of rings too!

  4. The potential for you gym looks awesome! You have to post a video when it is complete.

Also, what blog host did you switch to? It looks really good and I’m getting sick of blogspot.

    Thanks

  5. @Sher Khan – Thanks! I’ll try to keep you guys as updated as possible on the progress. It’s coming along nicely though. I’ve got episode 2 filmed already…it’s just in editing. I’ll try to have it up by Thursday or Friday.

@Mike – Hey Mike, thanks. With another addition coming in the fall, the wife and I really wanted to try to “create” another living/play space for our family. I’ll update you with what’s going on via video.
Re: the new Blog – I switched over to wordpress. It’s a custom theme done by my amazing web designer. I’m using HostICan.com to host it.

  6. This is really exciting! I never thought about doing this in my back yard, but couldn’t help imagining it as you gave your video tour. We have a large back yard and plenty of room… no excuses! I’m really looking forward to seeing your progress.

  7. Wow, I just found your blog this morning (europe) and I like it a lot! Like the way you train, the way you eat. But most of all I like that you seem to be such a great dad. And how beautiful your kids are!

    Thanks for a great read.
